Mara
Mara Ruffin Blackmon is a dedicated community advocate and public servant who believes effective leadership starts with being present and engaged.
Mara Ruffin Blackmon is a lifelong Jefferson County resident, nurse, business owner, and community leader dedicated to strengthening families and expanding opportunities across District 57.
A proud Brighton native, Mara attended Midfield High School before earning her nursing degree from Lawson State Community College. She later continued her education studying political science at Miles College, further strengthening her understanding of public service and policy. She is a devoted wife, mother of four, and grandmother whose life is grounded in faith, family, and service.
Faith has always been central to Mara’s life. She was raised in Friendship Baptist Church in Brighton and is a longtime member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Dr. Victor L. Harkins, Sr. Her faith guides her commitment to service, compassion, and standing up for the needs of others.
Mara is the owner of several small businesses in Jefferson County, including Bistro on 19th, Everyday Sunshine Childcare Center, and Giggles and Wiggles Academy. Through her work as an entrepreneur, she has created jobs, managed budgets responsibly, and understands firsthand the challenges families and small businesses face.
In 2015, Mara founded the Latch & Live Foundation to help rebuild lives and support families facing homelessness and economic hardship. Through the foundation, she has provided food, housing assistance, educational support, and community programming, including the creation of the House of Hope in Bessemer. Her work has reinforced her belief that lasting change comes from strong, stable systems that support people before they reach a crisis.
Mara is also a strong advocate for education, youth development, and senior engagement. She has funded scholarships, supported educators and classroom initiatives, and in 2023 founded Senior Circle to provide fellowship and resources for older adults. She has served as Vice Finance Chair of the Jefferson County Democratic Party and remains active in numerous civic and community organizations throughout the district.
Mara’s approach to leadership is grounded in listening to residents, understanding local needs, and working tirelessly to bring resources and real solutions back to the district. She believes the Alabama State House should be accessible, responsive, and focused on improving quality of life for every community it serves.
Mara’s commitment is simple and clear: show up, work hard, and deliver meaningful results for the people of District 57!
